Ms. Maria Lucinda Runin (or Lucy) is the owner and manager of a thriving bed and breakfast in the small town of Puerto Natales, Chile. Puerto Natales is the gateway to one of Chile’s most spectacular national parks, Torres del Paine. The park is famous for it’s glaciers, lakes, and the Cordillera del Paine as the centerpiece of the park.

Getting to the little town is a mission, especially coming from outside South America. But the experience of marveling at the Chilean Patagonia makes the blisters, sore muscles, no phone reception and simple camping meals worth it. Depending on how many days you choose to hike, it is crucial to get good rest before and after the trek; this is where Ms. Lucy comes in.

We bookended our five-day “W Trek” with a cozy stay at Ms. Runin’s “Hostel Casa Lucy”. Her kindness and dignified manner warmed my heart (and my damp clothing). I became curious about her background, how she found herself in Chilean Patagonia. Even though our interaction was brief, I am going to cherish it as something special. Ms. Runin is a person whose kindness radiates from her face and, as evident from her answers, her path to reach this point in her life required an extraordinary amount of hard work and determination.

2. Where is your hometown?

I was born in Quetalco, Castro – Chiloé. I currently live in Puerto Natales, Chile, and have been in this part of Chile for over 41 years.

3. What is your profession/career/title/self-label/designation? What does your average day look like?

I’m a business woman, an independent business owner.

4. What did you study in school?

I finished high school. Studied science and humanities with other basic subjects such as language, history, physics, chemistry, history, etc.

5. What was the journey like to get where you are (in life and career-wise)? Write about some of the achievements that you are most proud of. What was the moment for you that changed your life (in your personal life and/or career?) that set you on the current path in life?

My family was composed of my mother, father and ten brothers. I am the sixth sister. I’d say it’s a fairly large family by today’s standards, but back then most families were like ours.

When I was six, I went to a school in the countryside. In those years everything was more difficult; lots more daily sacrifices. I remember that from my house I had to walk over an hour along the coast to get to school, I studied until eighth grade. Apart from studying, us kids also had to help take care of the younger brothers and household chores such as carrying water, planting potatoes, wheat, oats, and taking care of the animals. Everything we ate back then, as a family, was harvested in the fields by us all.

At 13 I went to live in the city of Castro to continue my studies. I did not get to achieve that dream however, because at that time I met the father of my eldest daughter, we got married. As a woman, I had to fulfill the work of a wife and a mother, at only 19 years of age. It was not a nice experience and it was during that time when I realized that I had made a terrible mistake.

I decided to make the best of it, on my own, and continue working. You see, I was the sole breadwinner for my daughter and myself as the father of my daughter was not an economic contribution to our family, nor an emotional one. It was then that I made the decision to pack the little clothes I had and together with my daughter I left Castro. We headed toward the end of the world, Chilean Patagonia, a town called Puerto Natales.

I arrived in Puerto Natales, hoping to leave behind everything bad and heavy in my life, seeking economic stability, willing very much to work. My first job was to clean a church. As I found my bearings, I ventured into other jobs. One job the viewer may find interesting to read about was my time working at a fishing company. Thinking about it today, wow, it was a job full of personal sacrifices. I worked with with fish, hedgehogs and crabs, in very cold, damp places. Sometimes I had to get into giant freezers and work there, requesting extra shifts even. I needed to earn for myself and my daughter. On a brighter side, I was young and full of vitality; at that age there is no tiredness and in fact you find entertainment in anything you do.

In the period that I worked in the fishing industry, I met who was to become my current partner and a father of my second daughter. It was a lovely time, since we were getting to know each other, went out partying and having a lot of fun together. I appreciated that he was hardworking and also accepted the complete package, my daughter and myself.

This is how years of effort and work went by. During this time my partner was a fundamental pillar of strength, supporting me in everything, always. And at 35, we found out that we were going to be parents; I was pregnant with my second daughter.

Moving on, I got into artisanal fishing and even managed to have two small boats, naming them after my youngest daughter: “Yordana” and “Yordana II”. These vessels to this day continue to be an extra income for our household. At that time I decided to finish my high school studies, because then it was possible to find a high school for adults. I took advantage of going to drop my youngest daughter off at school and I also took advantage of going to study and that is how I managed to finish twelfth grade.

Because I always worked and was organized with money, I was able to save a lot and thus fulfilled my dream of owning a home. With time, my partner and I realized that although we had the economic stability in our family, my youngest was turning 18 and would soon be going to University. We as parents knew that we would not have enough money to afford to send her. That prompted my decision to have my own business. This is my job today and my main source of money. I run, what many people around the world know as, "Hostal Casa Lucy". I created this venture in 2010 and since then it has opened many doors for me to meet people from all over the world and learn new things from them.

I must admit that this job makes me very happy and fills me with energy. Although at times I have bad days, my guests most certainly will never know it, and will always receive a good treatment from me, my full attention and a kind smile.

Life has taught me to be a persevering person, to never give up. Women are full of surprises; anything you can imagine, you can achieve. I believe we should never be afraid of failure, but rather be afraid of not trying at all.

So to circle back to the question, my life journey began truly at 20. Looking back at it all, I admit that, through many fears and uncertainties, I became and remained an empowered woman. I am proud of everything I have achieved: my partnerships, economic stability, owning my own house and being able to run my own entrepreneurial venture.

6. How is your life different from what you pictured at 20?

At the age of 20, I didn't really have many expectations, I was only worried about working and raising my daughter. Today I can say that I am proud of what I have accomplished, moreover, I exceeded my expectations and achieved more than I expected at 20.

7. Was there a time when life knocked you down or out and how did you get back up on your feet?

What brought me down the most and brought much disappointment, was getting married so young. I believed that marriage would be for life. Another disappointment was not finishing my studies when I was supposed to, and not advancing to university. I overcame this disappointment, achieving my independence anyway, but with a lot of effort.

8. Advice for other women?

They must persevere through life’s difficulties. They should study, work, investigate and develop knowledge in all aspects of their life. The goal is to become independent and self-reliant, so no matter what tomorrow brings, they will be ok.

9. Knowing what we know now in a current political climate, can women be "all that we can be" in today's world? What is the way forward, as you see it, for "feminist values"?

A woman can achieve whatever she sets out to do in life by working hard and believing in her abilities. Nowadays, everything is more feasible than when I was starting out, you just have to believe the story you tell yourself and have faith in your dream.

10. Where in the world do you feel “tallest” (i.e. where is your happy place)?

My favorite place and where I feel fulfilled is my home. I also love spending time with my family.

11. What extracurricular activities/hobbies are you most proud of? Why?

When I have free time I go to swimming, do Zumba and Pilates. I am also part of a trade association called "Patagonian Women". We are a group of women who are entrepreneurs and business owners from different fields. I like it a lot because we spend much of the time talking, laughing, dancing, sharing and exchanging our life experiences.

12. What do you want to be when you grow up? Future goals/challenges?

When I am already going through the stage of old age, I only hope to continue to be accompanied by my partner, to be a self-reliant old woman, who can fend for myself, rest, have peace of mind and that my daughters accompany me until my last days.

14. Anything you'd do differently, if you had another go at life?

The truth is, I wouldn't do anything differently if I had another chance to live my life over. I believe that things happen for a reason and I feel in a certain way that the blows and falls I've experienced in life have made me the woman I I am today; I am proud of that. If I had to choose something that I would change, it would be not getting married so young and skipping some stages of my life all together.

15. What/who inspires you?

My daughters and granddaughters inspire me, despite the fact that they are already great women, I know that they will continue to grow even more and will go far. Another source of inspiration is my work, I hope to continue doing it for a long time, because I love interacting with people, and meeting travelers from other countries.

16. What are you hopeful about?

That at my age, and going forward, I will continue to have the same mental clarity, capacity and strength to get ahead.

17. What are some ingredients to a good life? How did the global pandemic change your perspective about the world, about your life, your goals and dreams?

For me the best ingredient is always going to be work. I have always said that work does not kill anyone, on the contrary, it keeps you active, it gives you vitality.

The pandemic hindered my source of work in my bed and breakfast. I haven’t had guests for two years and I must admit I was quite bored and felt sedentary.

18. What are (at least) three qualities you most love about yourself and why? What are your superpowers?

I am optimistic. I persevere. Also, I am a fairly direct person, without mincing words. I’m also a brave and strong woman.

19. What advice would you give your 14-year-old self? What advice would your 14-year-old self give you in return?

Be persevering and consistent. Keep fighting for your dreams, because you will achieve what you set out to do.

20. Who is a WOW WOMAN in your world who inspires you and why? Can you nominate three (or more) women you know who perfectly fit WOW WOMAN description? What would you tell them, if you had an opportunity, about why you admire them?

My greatest WOW Woman is my mother. When I was a child, in those times in Chile, there was a lot of poverty, it was really difficult to raise and support so many children. Given that my father was not a contributing to anything in the home, my mother was able to give us everything. She raised us and took care that we grew up never lacking anything.

La Sra. María Lucinda Runin (o Lucy) es la propietaria y administradora de un próspero bed and breakfast en el pequeño pueblo de Puerto Natales, Chile. Puerto Natales es la puerta de entrada a uno de los parques nacionales más espectaculares de Chile, Torres del Paine. El parque es famoso por sus glaciares, lagos y la Cordillera del Paine como pieza central del parque.

Llegar al pueblito es una misión, sobre todo viniendo de fuera de Sudamérica. Pero la experiencia de maravillarse con la Patagonia chilena hace que las ampollas, los músculos adoloridos, la falta de cobertura telefónica y las sencillas comidas de campamento valgan la pena. Dependiendo de cuántos días elija para caminar, es crucial descansar bien antes y después de la caminata; aquí es donde entra la Sra. Lucy.

Reservamos nuestro "W Trek" de cinco días con una estadía acogedora en el "Hostel Casa Lucy" de la Sra. Runin. Su amabilidad y manera digna calentaron mi corazón (y mi ropa húmeda). Sentí curiosidad por sus antecedentes, cómo se encontró en la Patagonia chilena. Aunque nuestra interacción fue breve, la apreciaré como algo especial. La Sra. Runin es una persona cuya bondad irradia de su rostro y, como se desprende de sus respuestas, su camino para llegar a este punto de su vida requirió una extraordinaria cantidad de trabajo duro y determinación.

Hola, mi nombre es María Lucinda Barrientos Runin. Mi familia estaba compuesta por mi madre, padre y diez hermanos, yo soy la sexta hermana, una familia bastante numerosa, antiguamente era así.

A los 6 años iba a un colegio de quetalco, en el campo, en esos años todo era más difícil y sacrificado. Recuerdo que desde mi casa debia caminar 1 hora por la costa para llegar al colegio, estudié hasta octavo básico. Aparte de estudiar, también debiamos ayudar a cuidar a los hermanos menores y quehaceres del hogar como acarrear agua, sembrar papas, trigo, avena, y cuidar a los animales, en esos tiempos nos alimentabamos de una manera más natural, ya que todo los que comiamos era lo que se cosechaba en el campo por nosotros mismos.

A los 13 años me fui a vivir a la ciudad de castro para poder seguir estudiando, pero no lo pude lograr, ya que en ese tiempo conocí al padre de mi hija mayor y me casé, lo cual debía cumplir la labor de esposa y madre con tan solo 19 años, no fue una linda experiencia y fue ahí cuando me di cuenta de que había cometido un error. Decidí seguir adelante y continuar trabajando para ser el sustento de mi hija, ya que el padre de mi hija no era un aporte económico y tampoco emocional.

Fue entonces cuando tomé la decisión de empacar la poca ropa que tenía junto con la de mi hija e irnos de castro con rumbo hacia el fin del mundo, la patagonia chilena, puerto natales.

Llegue a natales, con la esperanza de dejar atrás todo lo malo y buscar una estabilidad economica, dispuesta a trabajar, mi primer trabajo fue limpiar una iglesia.

Después me fui aventurando en otros empleos, entre esos comence a trabajar en una pesquera, pensandolo hoy en dia era un trabajo bastante sacrificado, ya que al trabajar con pescados, erizos y centollas habia que trabajar en lugares muy frios, a veces hasta teniamos que meternos a unas congeladores gigantes, incluso llegaba a trabajar turnos extras para así tener más dinero para mi y mi hija, pero como era joven y con mucha vitalidad, a esa edad no existía el cansacio y para mi era muy entretenido.

En el periodo que trabaje en la pesquera, conocí al que hoy es mi pareja actual y padre de mi segunda hija. Ese fue un periodo bastante bonito ya que nos estabamos conociendo, saliamos de fiesta y nos divertiamos mucho juntos, ademas los dos eramos muy trabajadores, y el acepto el pack completo que era yo y mi hija.

Otro de mis trabajos fue de asesora del hogar, trabaje durante 5 años. Tengo bonitos recuerdos de esa familia, ya que eran muy buenos jefes y me llevaba bastante bien con sus hijos, con el tiempo perdí contacto con ellos.

Así pasaron los años de mucho esfuerzo y trabajo, en la cual mi pareja era un pilar fundamental ya que siempre me apoyo en todo, es un buen partner. A mis 35 años nos enterabamos junto a mi pareja que ibamos a ser padres y estaba embarazada de mi segunda hija.

Después emprendi en la pesca artesanal, lo cual logré tener dos botes pequeños. Los botes tienen el nombre de mi hija menor “yordana” y “yordana ii”, en la actualidad esos botes continuan siendo un ingreso extra de dinero para el hogar. En esta época además decidí terminar mis estudios de enseñanza media, en ese tiempo habia un liceo para adultos, aprovechaba de ir a dejar a mi hija menor al colegio y yo tambien aprovechaba de ir a estudiar y fue así como logré terminar cuarto medio.

Debido a que siempre trabaje y era ordenada con el dinero, pude ahorrar bastante y gracias a eso pude cumplir el sueño de la casa propia.

Con el pasar del tiempo, mi pareja y yo nos dimos cuenta que si bien teniamos una estabilidad economica para nuestras hijas, mi hija menor ya cumpliría 18 años y debía entrar a la universidad, nosotros como padres sabíamos que no nos alcanzaría el dinero para que ella pudiera estudiar, fue así cuando decidí tener mi propio negocio, lo que hoy es mi trabajo y fuente de dinero y además lo que mucha gente de todo el mundo conoce como “hostal casa lucy”, cree este emprendimiento en el 2010, lo que me ha abierto muchas puertas para conocer gente de toooooodo el mundo.

Debo reconocer que este trabajo me hace muy feliz y me llena de energía, aunque a veces tenga dias malos para mis huespedes siempre va a ver un buen trato, buena atención y una sonrisa.

La vida me ha enseñado a ser una persona perseverante y a nunca decaer, ya que las mujeres somos una caja de sorpresas y cualqueir cosa que puedas imaginar, la puedes lograr, porque no debemos tener miedo al fracaso, sino tener miedo ha no intentarlo.

Mi profesión es ser comerciante, trabajo independiente.

4. ¿Qué estudió en la escuela?

El liceo era cientifico humanista, y teniamos las asignaturas básicas como lenguaje, historia, física, química, historia, etc.

5. Cuéntenos su trayectoria para llegar a donde está hoy en día, bien sea en su vida o en su carrera. ¿Cuáles son algunos de los logros de los que está más orgullosa y cuál fue el punto de inflexión que la encaminó a este punto?

Mi viaje de vida comenzo cuando solo tenía 20 años, debo reconocer que tenía muchos miedos e incertidumbre, pero siempre me he caracterizado por ser una mujer empoderada, logrando así, junto a mi pareja, estabilidad económica, logrando tener nuestra casa propia y mi emprendimiento.

6. ¿En qué se diferencia su vida de la que representó a los 20 años?

A los 20 años la verdad no tenía muchas expectativas, sólo me preocupada de trabajar y criar a mi hija mayor. Hoy en día puedo decir que estoy orgullosa de lo que he logrado, es más, superé mis expectativas, más de lo que esperaba a los 20.

7. ¿Hubo un momento en que la vida la derribó? ¿Cómo lo superó?

Lo que mas me golpeo y en su momento me desiluciono fue casarme tan joven, creyendo que sería para toda la vida. Otro motivo fue no haber terminado mis estudios cuando debía y no poder estudiar en la universidad. Esto lo superé con el tiempo, logrando mis independecia con mucho esfuerzo.

8. ¿Cuáles son sus consejos para otras mujeres?

Que deben ser perseverantes en la vida, que estudien, trabajen, investiguen y tengan conocimientos en todos los aspectos y que sean independientes, para que el día de mañana nadie las engrupa.

9. Actualizadas con el clima político corriente, ¿pueden las mujeres ser todo lo que les parece en el mundo de hoy? ¿Cuál es el camino a seguir, bajo su punto de vista, para los tales “valores feministas”?

Toda mujer puede lograr todo lo que se proponga en la vida, trabajando duro y creyendo en sus habilidades, hoy en día todo es más factible, sólo tienes que creerte el cuento.

10. ¿En qué lugar del mundo se siente "más alta" (es decir, en qué sitio o circunstancia se siente más cumplida)?

Mi lugar favorito y en donde me siento plena es mi casa, además me encanta compartir con mi familia.

11. ¿De qué actividades o pasatiempos está más orgullosa? ¿Por qué?

Cuando tengo tiempo libre asisto a natación, zumba, pilates. Tambien formo parte de una asociación gremial llamado “mujeres patagonas”, lo cual se caracteriza por ser un grupo de mujeres emprendedoras y empresarias de diferentes rubros, a mi me gusta mucho porque pasamos gran parte del tiempo conversando, riendo, bailando e intercambiando experiencias de vida.

12. ¿Qué desea ser cuando “seas grande”? ¿Cuáles son sus objetivos y desafíos del futuro?

Cuando ya este pasando por la etapa de la vejez, solo espero seguir acompañada de mi pareja, ser una anciana autovalente, que me pueda valer por mi misma, descansar, tener tranquilidad y que mis hijas me acompañen hasta mis últimos días.

13. ¿Qué temores aún esperas superar?

Puedo decir que hoy en día ya no tengo temores, y si en un momento de mi vida los tuve, los superé.

14. ¿Hay algo que haría diferente si tuviese otra oportunidad en la vida?

La verdad no haría nada diferente si tuviera otra oportunidad en la vida, soy de la idea de que las cosas pasan por algo y siento de cierta manera que los golpes y caídas que he tenido en la vida me han hecho ser la mujer que soy hoy y estoy orgullosa de eso. Si tuviera que elegir algo que cambiaría sería el no haberme casado tan joven y saltarme algunas etapas de mi vida.

15. ¿Qué la inspira?

Me inspiran mis hijas y nietas, a pesar de que ya son grandes mujeres, sé que seguirán creciendo aun más y llegarán muy lejos, otro motivo de inspiración es mi trabajo espero poder seguir haciendolo por mucho tiempo más, porque me encanta interactuar con gente de otros países.

16. ¿En qué guarda esperanza?

Que a la edad que tengo pueda tener la misma lucidez mental, la capacidad y fuerza para salir adelante.

17. ¿Cuáles son algunos ingredientes para una buena vida? ¿Ha cambiado la pandemia global su perspectiva sobre el mundo, sobre su vida, sus metas y sueños?

Para mi el mejor ingrediente siempre va a ser el trabajo, siempre he dicho que el trabajo no mata a nadie, todo lo contrario, te mantiene activo, te entrega vitalidad. La pandemia obstaculizo mi fuente de trabajo en la hostal, ya que fueron dos años en donde no tenía huespedes, además reconozco que me aburría bastante porque no tenía nada que hacer y me sentía muy sedentaria.

18. ¿Cuáles son (escriba al menos tres) cualidades que más ama de usted y por qué? ¿Cuáles son sus superpoderes?

Perseverancia, optimismo, soy una persona bastante directa, sin pelos en la lengua, mujer aguerrida y fuerte.

19. ¿Qué consejo se daría a si misma de 14 años?

Sé perseverante y constante, continúa luchando por tus sueños, porque lo lograrás.

20. ¿Quién es una mujer WOW en su mundo que la inspira y por qué? ¿Puede nominar a tres (o más) mujeres que conoce que encajan perfectamente con la descripción de WOW WOMAN? ¿Qué les dirías, si tuviese una oportunidad, de por qué las admira?

Mi mayor mujer inspiradora es mi madre, ya que en esos tiempos se veía mucha pobreza y era realmente dificil criar y mantener a tantos hijos, tomando en mi cuenta que mi padre no era un aporte en el hogar. Mi madre fue capaz de entregarnos todo, criarnos, cuidarnos y que nunca nos faltara nada.
