Ms. Maria Toledo is a craftswoman and an entrepreneur. Her story is that of curiosity, perseverance and self-discovery. Ms. Toledo, proud of her Zapotec roots, wants to teach the world about her Mexican heritage; she creates and sells traditionally embroidered garments and crafts in the towns La Paz and La Ventana (both located on the Baja California Peninsula, in Mexico). Maria recounts tough moments in her life, encourages us all to learn from our mistakes, to push onward with dignity and good attitude. “Smile at life every single day” is her motto. We are proud to present Ms. Toledo’s interview in both English (translated and edited) and Spanish for bi-lingual readers.

2. Where is your hometown?

My hometown is Tapachula, Chiapas but I grew up in my mothers hometown El Espinal, Oaxaca  which is in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. I currently live in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico.

3. What is your profession/career/title/self-label/designation?

I stayed in school until 3rd grade. But I was inspired by my youngest daughter to return to study as an adult and seven years ago I completed secondary education.

4. What was the journey like to get where you are (in life and career-wise)? What are some accomplishments you’re most proud of, and what was the turning point to set you on a current path in life?

My daughter brought me 5,000 km away to my current city of La Paz, Mexico. When I arrived I felt so far away from my fellow Zapotec peoples (an indigenous people of Mexico. The population is concentrated in the southern state of Oaxaca, but Zapotec communities also exist in neighboring states. The present-day population is estimated at approximately 800,000 to 1,000,000 persons, many of whom are monolingual in one of the native Zapotec languages and dialects. In pre-Columbian times, the Zapotec civilization was one of the highly developed cultures of Mesoamerica, which, among other things, included a system of writing).

I decided to embark on a journey of self-rediscovery and developed my knowledge of embroidery. I have been able to use this skill to setup my own shop and sell to both locals and foreigners. This shop and my economic solvency are something I am immensely proud of.

5. What did you study in school?

My mother took me out of school as soon as I learned to read; she wanted me to learn different trades instead. I thus was taught how to make clothes, cut hair and how to administer first aid.  

6. How is your life different from what you pictured at 20?

I was married and disillusioned at 20, as marriage was not what I had hoped it would be. Because my mother was strict and forbade many friend interactions I made a decision, at 18, to marry. I felt as though it would be an escape and a way out for me. Unfortunately the marriage was not successful. It was difficult, as I didn’t have an open communication with my mother and felt that since she had no education of any kind she couldn’t advise me about my future.

7. Was there a time when life knocked you down or out and how did you get back on your feet?

Yes, the separation from my husband was a very difficult period for me. It was not a civil parting and was made more intense by domestic violence in the relationship. At this point there were no psychological therapies I could access to help me recover so I worked 16-hour days in a cafeteria. I feel this life event framed me as a person and made me who I am today.

8. Advice for other women?

I would recommend marrying the right person for the right reasons and not because you want to escape (your current situation). I would also suggest not getting married young, to allow yourself the time to grow, study and build a career before you settle down.

9. Knowing what we know now in a current political climate, can women be "all that we can be" in today's world? What is the way forward, as you see it?

Take your time. Investigate and analyse the gaps in your surroundings, study and ensure you have parity in your school, home and work life.

10. Where in the world do you feel “tallest” (i.e. where is your happy place)?

I feel happiest when I am wearing traditional clothes from my home region of Chiapas. I feel a great sense of pride when I wear these garments to parties or important meetings.

11. What extra-curricular activities/hobbies are you most proud of and why?

Together with my youngest daughter I share my knowledge of embroidery with others. It makes me so happy to know the lessons I teach carry on and will forever live on in my students.

12. What do you want to be when you grow up? Future goals/challenges?

I want to develop and spread the tradition of embroidery in places where it does not currently exist.

13. What fears are you still hoping to overcome?

The fear is real: discrimination against me because of my skin color, age and my mother tongue (Zapoteco).

14. Anything you would do differently, if you had another go at life?

I would not have gotten married so young.

15. What inspires you?

Frida Kahlo, for being such a strong person.

16. What are you hopeful about?

In the future I hope to retain my mental lucidity, alertness as well as the ability and strength to drive myself forward.

17. What are some ingredients to a good life?

Eat healthy, exercise, do not have any vices. Most of all, smile at life every single day.

18. What is a quality you most love about yourself and why?

I love that I can prepare beautiful meals in my kitchen and that other people are able to enjoy my cooking.

19. What advice would you give to your 14-year-old self?

I would advise to study more, listen to my parents and choose reliable friends who care about my family.

20. What are your reading now?

I am currently reading books by Gabriel García Márquez and Og Mandino.

21. Who is your WOW woman in your world who inspires you and why?

I admire WOW Woman Katherine Meining (who lives and works at a US Air Force base in Japan). She is a very strong and respectable woman. She has succeeded in a profession which demands dedication and sacrificing part of one’s life. I believe it is especially difficult for a woman to be able to do this in the military. But she does so whilst thoroughly enjoying her role.

I also respect WOW Woman Esther Dielissen who is very active, with a thirst for life and nature, and is ensuring she is studying and learning all the time. I was drawn to this WOW Woman because, like Esther, my daughter is also a biologist.

2. ¿ Cuál es su pueblo natal? Tapachula, Chiapas y criada de muy pequeñita en El Espinal, Oaxaca. (Istmo de Tehuantepec), lugar de donde es mi madre.

3. ¿Cuál es su profesión, carrera, título o designación? Estudie hasta el 3er. Año de primaria y hace 7 años termine la primaria y secundaria en la Educación para adultos (esto animada por mi hija menor).

4. Cuéntenos su trayectoria para llegar a donde está hoy en día, bien sea en su vida o en su carrera. ¿Cuáles son algunos de los logros de los que está más orgullosa y cuál fue el punto de inflexión que la encaminó a este punto? El haber llegado a esta ciudad por invitación de mi hija y en haber encontrado en estas tierras tan lejanas a paisanos de mi misma etnia (Zapoteca), a partir de ahí comenzó mi idea de retomar mi conocimiento que tengo en el bordado el cual ha ido mejorando además que es muy apreciado por la gente local y extranjera del cual me siento orgullosa.

Mi logro es tener mi tiendita y que me de solvencia económica del cual me siento orgullosa.

5. ¿Qué estudió en la escuela? Mi madre me sacó de la escuela de muy pequeña porque ella consideraba que ya tenía conocimiento de leer, escribir así que mi mamá me llevó aprender oficios, me llevó con costurera para que aprendiera hacer ropa, después con otra señora para que aprendiera a inyectar, después me llevo a un centro de salud para que aprendiera primeros auxilios y después me llevó a un salón de belleza para que me enseñaran a cortar el pelo.

6. ¿En qué se diferencia su vida de la que representó a los 20 años? A esa edad ya estaba casada sin hijos aun y no se parece a nada a la actual, por que el matrimonio no era lo que yo pensaba, por que me case a los 18 años y fue como una salida de escape de mi casa ya que mi madre me prohibía tener amigos y amigas entonces para mi casarme fue mi salida fácil y por lo tanto no me fue bien en mi matrimonio.

No tuve una comunicación abierta con mi madre ya que ella no tuvo educación de ninguna índole para que me aconsejara.

7. ¿Hubo un momento en que la vida la derribó? Si, la separación con mi esposo no fue de común acuerdo, hubo violencia intrafamiliar y fue un suceso en mi vida que me marco.

¿Cómo lo superó? A base de trabajo físico, en mi época no había terapias psicológicas y superaban a base de trabajo (abrí una cafetería y trabajé 16 horas)

8. ¿Cuáles son sus consejos para otras mujeres? No se casen tan jóvenes, que maduren que tengan amigos para poder conocer a la pareja idónea, no quieran correr. Lo mejor es prepararse como estudiar una carrera y seguir preparándose.

9. Actualizadas con el clima político corriente, ¿pueden las mujeres ser todo lo que les parece en el mundo de hoy? ¿Cuál es el camino a seguir, bajo su punto de vista, para los tales “valores feministas”? Sí, primero antes que nada estudiar, prepararse, investigar cuales son las carencias que existen en tu entorno, inculcar la paridad en casa, en el trabajo, en la escuela.

10. ¿En qué lugar del mundo se siente "más alta" (es decir, en qué sitio o circunstancia se siente más cumplida)? Cuando me pongo el traje típico de mi región, ya que perteneció a mi madre y me siento feliz de portarlo con orgullo en una fiesta o reunión importante, eso es mi complemento.

11. ¿De qué actividades o pasatiempos está más orgullosa? ¿Por qué? El compartir con otras personas mi conocimiento mediante un taller de bordado que estoy impartiendo junto con mi hija menor. Esta retroalimentación con mis alumnas me pone muy feliz, porque siento que este aprendizaje nunca va terminar y seguirá siempre vivo.

12. ¿Qué desea ser cuando “seas grande”? ¿Cuáles son sus objetivos y desafíos del futuro? Seguir haciendo lo que actualmente hago porque me gusta y así lograr llegar a otros lugares en donde no se conozca esta tradición del bordado.

13. ¿Qué temores aún esperas superar? Que me discriminen por mi color de piel, edad y por mi lengua materna (Zapoteco).

14. ¿Hay algo que haría diferente si tuviese otra oportunidad en la vida? No haberme casado tan joven.

15. ¿Qué la inspira? Frida Khalo, por ser una persona muy fuerte.

16. ¿En qué guarda esperanza? Que a la edad que tengo pueda tener la misma lucidez mental, la capacidad y fuerza para salir adelante.

17. ¿Cuáles son algunos ingredientes para una buena vida? Alimentarse sanamente, hacer ejercicio, no vicios y sonreírle a la vida diariamente.

18. ¿Cuál es la cualidad que más ama en si misma y por qué? La cocina y que mis comensales les guste lo que yo preparo ya que lo hago con mucho gusto.

19. ¿Qué consejo se daría a si misma de 14 años? Estudiar, obedecer a mis padres, tener amigos confiables y que mis papas conozcan a mis amigos.

20. ¿Qué está leyendo actualmente? (¿Qué libros le gustan más y cuáles son sus lecturas favoritas?) Gabriel García marques y Og Mandino.

21. ¿Quién es una mujer WOW en su mundo que la inspira y por qué? ¿Puede nominar a tres (o más) mujeres que conoce que encajan perfectamente con la descripción de WOW WOMAN? ¿Qué les dirías, si tuviese una oportunidad, de por qué las admira?

Katherine Meining, es una mujer muy fuerte, admirable y respetable su profesión ya que se requiere de mucha dedicación y amor, ya que sacrificas parte de tu vida a algo que le gusta “la milicia”, sobre todo que es difícil para una mujer, pero ella lo disfruta.

Iris Esther Dielissen, es una chica muy activa, le gusta la vida y la naturaleza, además es una chica que aún se sigue preparando y también me gusta porque hija también es bióloga.
