Words of introduction for this Inside Ukraine feature come from Mr. Serhii Lukianchuk, who proudly handed over the leadership of two manufacturing factories to our Inside Ukraine WOW Woman, Ms. Ludmila Petrivna Tereschenko. As Ukraine’s national sovereignty was challenged by the russian invader on February 24th, 2022, Mr. Lukianchuk immediately volunteered to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Serhii and Ludmila are coworkers at the Trivium Packaging Company. Before the war, they were just two people, working in an international company, focused on the production and supply of metal packaging for a variety of industries in Ukraine and Europe. After the invasion, these Ukrainians became superheroes; both stepping up in different ways to keep fighting and resisting, even amid bombs and destruction. Mr. Lukianchuk defends his Homeland and Ms. Tereschenko ensures factories’ success, workers’ job security and most importantly, nation’s uninterrupted supply of metal canned products. Ludmila is literally keeping the country fed.

This is the first time Ms. Tereschenko will be reading Serhii Lukianchuk’s words of appreciation, in this nomination for WOW Woman:

Serhii Lukianchuk was running two manufacturing plants in Ukraine. Ms. Ludmila Tereschenko took over the leadership reigns when Mr. Lukianchuk voluntarily joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He is bravely defending Ukraine from the russian aggressor; she is providing jobs and feeding the nation. Glory to Ukraine! Слава Україні!

"My professional working collaboration with Ludmila Petrivna Tereschenko began in 2012. She first joined my team as the Head of Quality Control. Very soon, Ludmila Petrivna's unbridled energy and enthusiasm led her to the position of the Deputy Director of Quality, Standardization and Certification. Ludmila Petrivna has a unique combination of professionalism and extraordinary personal qualities; she has solved the most difficult, for the company, tasks. One is how to grow business under the most stressful of circumstances, war.

Back in 2018, our shareholders approved expansion of the production capabilities of the Ukrainian division of the Trivium Packaging Company; the plant was to be based in the Chernivtsi Region (in the southwest of Ukraine). Once the production assets were pledged and purchased, we set out to find talented and driven individuals. Our goal was to assemble a team of like-minded individuals who were able to build a production process and fill the enterprise with life in the shortest possible time. Ludmila Petrivna Tereschenko was the most active and efficient participant in this effort; thanks to her efforts, it was not only possible to start production in under a year, but also successfully pass the British Retail Consortium (BRC) certification (BRC was developed to help the food industry comply with the UK and EU food safety laws, becoming an internationally recognized benchmark for best practice in food safety, quality and responsibility).

On the day of the full-scale invasion, and despite there being multiple competent male managers on our team, it was Ludmila Petrivna who received the first email from me about my decision to voluntarily join Ukraine’s Armed Forces. I was handing off the role to her, and promoting her. We agreed on the key goals and responsibilities as well as her power as the Acting Director of the entire enterprise during my absence. I am proud to write that thanks to Ludmila Petrivna, over the past (and hardest for the country) year, our factories were not only able to survive, but also showed an increase in the volume of production and sales of the finished products. Thanks to Ms. Tereschnko’s efforts, both factories flourished. This is crucial, as it means that production and business were able to provide for the families of the employees as well as those employees who volunteered in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as Nation’s defenders.

Ludmila Petrivna joined the company when there was one plant; we have since purchased another factory in Khotyn, in the Chernivtsi region of Ukraine. I am thankful to Ms. Tereschenko, for her immense efforts in dual roles of the General Manager as well as the Plant Operations Manager in both factory locations - the Bila Tserkva and Chernivtsi regions.”

1. Name.

Ludmila Petrivna Tereschenko.

2. Where were you born and where do you live now?

I was born in Narodychi, a town near the border with Belarus.

3. What did you study and what is your profession?

I attended Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv named after a great Ukrainian poet. I’m a trained Chemist, Engineer and an Educator. I currently work as the Deputy Director for Certification, Standardization and Quality at Trivium Packaging Ukraine. This is an acting role since our director is currently protecting Ukraine, serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

4. What was your typical day like before the war and how has your role changed since the invasion of Ukraine? 

Before the war started, I was enjoying my work, aiming to constantly improve production processes. I also enjoyed travel, spending time with my family, attending fitness classes, having joyous meetups with my friends, watching movies and reading books.

Our plant in Bila Tserkva is located next to a military airfield; on the first day of the war, the airfield was bombed by the russians. At first, we immediately evacuated all employees, but later in the day everyone returned to work, prioritizing unloading metal-filled trucks.

On the second day of the war we started shipping products. I decided that we needed to re-launch the plant operations because the Army needed canned food, our employees (and their families) needed salaries, and Ukraine needed our tax revenues. I am proud to say that we resumed full production on March 14th, 18 days after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.

(Olga, I was typing this, the electricity was cut off, there is no internet to keep writing). I apologize, I had to pause answering the questions, as the war deeply affected my life, again. My dearest nephew, only 23 years old, was killed by the russians on the front. He just graduated from the law academy and volunteered to defend Ukraine’s freedom in the city of Soledar. Last week has been very hard for my family; next week is the funeral. I plan to dig deeper into your questions and answer more tomorrow.)

This aggression has made us stronger. The more cruelty russia shows us, the stronger we hold on! We don’t just want peace, we want VICTORY!

After the aggressor's attack, my work duties changed as follows: I became an Acting Director, re-launched the plant, helped mobilize employees, assisted Ukraine’s Territorial Defense guys as well as the Armed Forces of Ukraine. I also helped the mayor's office and volunteered, organizing the production of trench candles, helped employees who suffered during the war, provided employees' families with whatever was necessary everything and participating in the UNIDO energy management programm (UNIDO seeks to address these concerns by promoting sustainable energy solutions in moving towards building ‘Climate Resilient Industries’).

I’m proud to report that, in the last year of war, our plant saw better financial success than over the past five years. We also enjoyed the highest audit ratings from both BRC and Veritas.

I get up at 6 AM, at the plant at 7 AM, meet with employees first thing every morning, then proceed to work and oversee work-flow processes. When we hear an air raid alarm we go down to the company bomb-shelter and conduct various trainings, we discuss what can be improved in the production processes. We are also sorting through rejected products to then cut cardboard for making trench candles, which is one of our contributions for Ukrainian soldiers on the front line.

Volunteers throughout Ukraine and abroad (for example, Poland) making ‘trench candles’ for the Armed Forces of Ukraine: cardboard sheets are cut up into strips, then twisted and fitted inside tin cans, the cans are then filled with a mixture of wax and paraffin. These makeshift candles can be used to warm Ukrainian soldiers, dry out their dugouts, clothes or even allow the Defenders to cook food in the trenches.

I leave for home at 6 PM, and then almost all my time is spent analyzing the plants' activities and developing improvements. I find out what the needs of the war volunteers are and look for ways to help. I’m proud that my children are also involved in the volunteer activities; that's how we spend time together now, volunteering.

We all started functioning in a completely different way after February 24th, 2022. I remember those first days, there was a lot of confusion, but that didn’t last long. Everyone was trying to figure out how to contribute. The day after the invasion, on February 25th, thousands came out in Bila Tserkva, people went straight to the Defense Centers. We were like ants on an anthill. Some people poured sand into bags, some were assembling flammable mixtures, some were preparing lunches for the mobilized population and others were collecting food for the army. When you take part in something like this, you can’t help but feel overwhelmed with the incredible energy and pride for our nation. Noone paid attention to the sirens, we felt that our actions were bringing us closer to victory. So many memories came flooding back, it seems like it was an alternate personality. Of course then I had to re-launch the plant.

5. What would you say are your strengths and superpowers?

The basis of all success is my professional team and my family. I am able to organize and motivate my team to achieve goals, make operational decisions, and take responsibility. I take a structured, systematic approach to solving problems which results in a continuous improvement.

6. What are things you do just for you? Is it possible to stay sane in a war situation? What are some things that help you to not lose yourself?

Well-being of my colleagues and my family depends on me; I have no right to have doubts or fears.

Я отримала дуже цінний для мене подарунок від дівчинки, якій 12р. Вона плете браслети, продає їх і віддає гроші волонтерам на потреби ЗСУ, я перераховую їй кошти на матеріали. Так от вона мені передала подарунок, я не могла стримати сліз. З такими дітками Україну не здолати нікому і ніколи.

I received a very valuable to me gift from a 12-year-old Ukrainian girl. She weaves and sells bracelets, donates proceeds to the Armed Forces of Ukraine; I pay for her materials. I couldn't hold back the tears when saw these, made with Ukrainian colours, with the little notes of thanks and of hope for our imminent victory. When I see our children, the next generation, I realize that Ukraine cannot be conquered by anyone, ever.

2017 vs. now. I have always had wonderful coworkers who continue to value me.

7. Do you feel the war changed you? How? Since the start of the war, has anything surprised you about yourself (how you have handled yourself, remained strong, found inspiration in unlikely sources, etc.), about your country, about your ideas about humanity? What have been some of your epiphanies?

Yes, the war changed us all. This damn war has brought us so much grief! One of my nephews lost a leg at the age of 21, another dear nephew was killed at the age of 23. Yet We grit our teeth and somehow continue to live. We have become stronger in spirit, more united and even kinder. We appreciate each day more.

We love Ukraine, and we are immensely thankful to the whole world for helping us. We are a happy nation because everyone united around us. In the first days of the war, most people united, regardless of language or political party, successful businessmen alongside simple workers. My grandfather is russian and I spoke russian until these inhumans came to “free” us; but really to kill us.

We have truly become a united nation now. I pray for our Defenders, my soul tears with pain when I think about how many young men and women have been killed and how many have been injured. These savages must be held accountable for all their crimes so that this will never happen anywhere else in the world.

8. What do you want the world to know about Ukrainians at this moment in time? About Ukrainian women?

I probably won't be original here, but thanks to these terrible events, I realized how united we can be as a people, when it comes to fighting for our Independence. We have one dream for all of us - Victory!

When you are a part of this movement for Freedom, it fills you with great strength and energy, you forget about yourself, your own well-being, you donate to the Armed Forces, collect aid and dream only that God will save our Defenders!

We are immensely grateful to the whole world for their support; we really appreciate the help we receive from foreign nations. As for me, the most important thing has been to see entire world uniting around Ukraine, in our fight for peace, humanity and justice.

I am 55, I grew up in the Soviet Union; We were victims of the Soviet propaganda and collectively believed that the whole world was against us. But we see the light and learned how cynically we were misled by our leaders. I talk a lot with young people about this.

I believe it is necessary to convey the truth to those who are currently victims of the russian propaganda, to change their worldview, which will make it impossible for dictators to come to power in the future and will allow us to change the world for the better.

9. Who are your WOW Women who inspire you?

I am inspired by women who achieve their goals, who are constantly growing and developing, who know how to overcome difficulties and enjoy life.

10. What is a place or activity that makes you feel happiest?

When I see that I’ve made someone happy, it makes my day.

When I send donations and I believe that my contribution will help someone, I feel happy.

I know that volunteers are a great force, because when my nephew (who was blown up near the town of Izium on an armored personnel carrier) had one leg amputated and his other leg was in danger, we raised funds for treatment and prosthetics. We successfully fundraised for and donated three vehicles to the units in which our work colleagues are bravely fighting.

11. What will be the first thing you’ll do when Ukraine wins? What are your dreams for yourself and your family after the war is finished?

When Ukraine wins, the first thing we will have to do is provide psychological assistance to our military and children who have lost their parents. My dream for my family is that I will have grandchildren and they will never know war. I also dream that we can travel again, together as a family.

Вступне слово до цього матеріалу Inside Ukraine належить пану Сергію Лук'янчуку, який з гордістю передав керівництво двома виробничими заводами нашій WOW-жінці Inside Ukraine пані Людмилі Петрівні Терещенко. Коли 24 лютого 2022 року російський окупант кинув виклик національному суверенітету України, пан Лук'янчук одразу пішов добровольцем до лав Збройних Сил України. Сергій та Людмила - колеги по роботі в компанії Trivium Packaging; до війни вони були звичайними українцями, які працювали в міжнародній компанії, що спеціалізується на виробництві та постачанні металевого пакування  для різних галузей промисловості в Україні та Європі.

Після вторгнення ці двоє українців стали супергероями, обидва активізувалися, щоб продовжувати боротися і чинити опір серед бомб і руйнувань. Пан Лук'янчук захищає свою Батьківщину, а пані Терещенко забезпечує успішну роботу заводів, збереження робочих місць для працівників і, що найважливіше, безперебійне постачання української нації металевою консервованою продукцією. Людмила в буквальному сенсі годує Україну. Пані Терещенко вперше зачитає слова подяки від Сергія Лук'янчука в цій номінації для WOW Woman:

“Моя співпраця з Людмилою Петрівною Терещенко почалася багато років тому, в далекому 2012 році. Вона приєдналась до команди нашого підприємства в ролі  керівника відділу контролю якості. Дуже скоро невгамона енергія та ентузіазм Людмили Петрівни привели її на посаду «заступника директора з якості, стандартизації та сертифікації». Безумовно в Україні багато жінок володіють високою кваліфікацією та мають значний досвід у різних галузях, але таке поєднання професіоналізму та особистих якостей, як у Людмили Петрівни - унікальна комбінація що давала можливість вирішувати найскладніші задачі, що ставило перед підприємством жіття.

Так наприкінці 2018 року, наші акціонери реалізували проєкт з розширення виробничих потужностей українського підрозділу компанії «Тривіум Пекеджинг Україна» - в Чернівецькій області були придбані виробничі активи що перебували в заставі одного з українських банків. Людмила Петрівна Терещенко була найактивнішим учасником цього процесу і завдяки її зусиллям вдалося менше ніж за рік не тільки запустити виробництво, а й з успіхом пройти сертифікацію BRC.

Тому в мене не було сумнівів, що не дивлячись на те що в нашій команді є досвідчені менеджери - чоловіки, 24.02.2022 року першого листа з повідомленням про прийняте мною рішення піти добровільно до лав Збройних Сил, я написав саме Людмилі Петрівні. Ми погодили ключові питання та її повноваження як виконавця обов’язки директора підприємства на час моєї відсутності.

Пишаюся тим, що завдяки Людмилі Петрівні, за рік що минув, наші заводи не тільки змогли «вижити», а і показали певний приріст обсягів виробництва та продажу готової продукції і завдяки цьому змогли забезпечити не тільки сім’ї співробітників, а і взяти  активну участь в волонтерської діяльності та допомозі співробітникам, що пішли до лав Збройних Сил.

Людмила Петрівна приєдналася до компанії, коли у нас був один завод; з того часу ми придбали ще один завод у Хотині, Чернівецька область, Україна. Я вдячний пані Терещенко за її величезні зусилля на посаді генерального директора, а також директора з виробництва на обох фабриках - у Білій Церкві та Чернівцях.”

ХІМІК, ІНЖЕНЕР, КЕРІВНИК, ПАТРІОТ, БІЛА ЦЕРКВА

2. Де ви народились?

Народичі Житомирська обл., поряд з кордоном з Білоруссю. Зараз проживаю в місті Біла Церква, в Київської області.

3. На кого навчались та за якою професією працюєте зараз?

Київській Національний Університет ім. Шевченка, хімік-інженер-викладач, працюю заступником директора з сертифікації, стандартизації та якості, наразі, через те, що  директор, захищає Україну, то я виконую обов’язки директора.

4. Як виглядав ваш звичайний день до війни та як змінилася ваша роль після вторгнення в Україну? Що ви робите для підтримки України (волонтерство) і який ваш типовий день зараз?

До війни: цікава робота, постійне вдосконалення всіх виробничих процесів, відпочинок і подорожі з сім'єю, заняття фітнесом, зустрічі з друзями, кіно, книги.

Наш завод розташований поруч з військовим аеродромом, у перший день війни аеродром розбомбили. Ми евакуювали всіх працівників, але в той же день повернулися і організували розвантаження вантажівок з металом, на другий день війни ми вже відвантажували продукцію. І тоді я вирішила, що потрібно запускати завод, тому що армії потрібні банки для консервів, працівникам потрібна зарплата, Україні потрібні наші податкові надходження. Ми відновили виробництво 14 березня (18 днів після повномасштабного російського вторгнення в Україну).

На жаль, зараз відключено електроенергію, тому немає Інтернету. Перепрошую, але війна знову внесла корективи в моє життя. В Соледарі геройські загинув мій племінник, 23 роки хлопчині, закінчив юридичну академію і пішов добровольцем захищати нашу свободу. Останній тиждень був важкий, на наступному тижні буде поховання. Я на завтра запланувала заглибитись в Ваші питання (продовження буде пізніше). Це дуже зворушливо.  Ця агресія зробила нас сильними, і чим більше жорстокості з боку Росії, тим міцніше ми всі тримаємося і хочемо не миру, а Перемоги.

Після нападу агресора: обов’язки директора, запуск заводу, допомога мобілізованим співробітникам, допомога теробороні і ЗСУ, допомога мерії і волонтерам , організація виготовлення окопних свічок, допомога співробітникам, які постраждали під час війни, забезпечення сімей співробітників всім необхідним, участь в програмі UNIDO по впровадженню енергоменеджменту. Завод отримав найкращий фінансовий результат за останні 5 років, найвищі рейтинги аудитів BRC і бюро Веритас. Підйом о 6, на заводі о 7-10, зустрч зі співробітниками кожного ранку, потім робочі процеси, під час сигналу тривоги спускаємось в бомбосховище і проводимо навчання, обговорюємо, що можемо покращити в процесах на виробництві, паралельно нарізаємо картон для виготовлення свічок окопних. Ми перебираємо продукцію відбраковану і використовуємо для виготовлення окопах свічок, які виготовляється в період, коли відключають електроенергію. Додому їду о 6, потім практично весь час займає аналіз діяльності заводів і розробка вдосконалень. Дізнаюсь, які потреби у волонтерів і шукаю шляхи допомоги. Діти також займаються волонтерською діяльністю, там і бачимо зараз.

Зовсім по іншому всі ми відкрилися після 24 лютого. Я згадую ці перші дні, розгубленість була 24, коли треба було кожному зрозуміти чим він може допомогти, а вже 25 лютого тисячі людей в Білій Церкві пішли до центрів тероборони. Ми були як мурахи в мурашнику. Ті насипають пісок в мішки, ті розливають горючі суміші, ті готують обіди для мобілізованих, ті збирають продукти для армії. І коли ти в цьому береш участь, то тебе переповнює неймовірна енергія і гордість за нашу націю... А далі вже ніхто не звертав увагу на сигнали тривоги, кожен розумів що так наближаємо перемогу. Так багато спогадів нахлинуло, вже здається, що це було не зі мною. А потім треба було запускати завод.

5. Які, на вашу думку, ваші сильні сторони та надздібності?

Основа всіх успіхів - моя команда, моя сім’я. Вмію організувати і мотивувати команду  на досягнення цілей, приймати оперативні рішення, беру на себе відповідальність. Структурований, системний підхід до розв’язання всіх задач, постійне вдосконалення .

6. Як ви дбаєте про себе? Чи можна взагалі залишатися морально стабільним в умовах війни? Що саме допомагає вам збирати себе до купи?

Я знаю, що від мене залежить добробут  моїх колег, моєї сім'ї, тому я не маю права на сумніви і на страх.

7. Чи відчуваєте, що війна змінила вас? Яким чином? Чи здивувались ви самій собі (як ви тримались, залишалися сильними, знаходили натхнення в несподіваних джерелах тощо), у своїй країні, у своїх уявленнях про людяність, у своєму ставленні до світу? Що стало для вас прозрінням?

Так, війна змінила всіх нас. Ця клята війна принесла нам стільки горя. Один мій племінник залишився без ноги у 21 рік, один загинув у 23. Але зціпивши зубами, ми продовжуємо жити. Ми стали сильніші духом, згуртованіші, добріші. Ми більше цінуємо кожен день.

Ми безмежно любимо Україну, і безмежно дякуємо всьому світу за допомогу нам. Ми щаслива нація, тому що навколо нас об’єднався весь світ. Коли в перші дні війни об'єдналися всі люди, попри мову, якою  ти говориш і яку партію підтримуєш, чи ти успішний бізнесмен, чи ти простий робітник. А ще, у мене дідусь росіянин, я розмовляла російською, а ці нелюди прийшли нас звільняти, тобто нас вбивати. Ми дійсно стали зараз згуртованою нацією. Я молюсь за наших Захисників, душа розривається від болю, коли думаєш скільки молодих хлопців і дівчат загинуло, а скільки скалічено... Ці нелюди мають відповісти за всі злочини, щоб це ніде більше у світі і ніколи не повторилось.

8. Що ви хочете, щоб світ знав про українців у цей момент часу? Про українських жінок?

Я вже, мабуть, не буду оригінальною, але завдяки цим страшним подіям, я зрозуміла які ми можемо бути згуртовані, коли йде мова про боротьбу за нашу Незалежність. У нас одна мрія на всіх - Перемога!!! Коли ти є частинкою цього руху за Свободу, це тебе наповнює величезною силою і енергією, ти забуваєш про себе, про свій добробут, ти донатиш на ЗСУ, збираєш допомогу і мрієш тільки, щоб Бог зберіг наших Захисників! Ми безмежно вдячні всьому світу за підтримку і дуже цінуємо допомогу, яка нам надається. Як на мене, то це саме важливе, що весь світ об'єднався навколо України в боротьбі за мир, людяність і справедливість. Мені 55, я росла в Радянському Союзі. Ми також були жертвами радянської пропаганди і вірили, що весь світ проти нас. Але ми прозріли, ми дізнались наскільки цинічно нас всіх вводили в оману і наразі я багато спілкуюсь з молоддю щодо цього. Тому що треба донести правду тим, хто є наразі жертвою російської пропаганди, змінити їх світосприйняття, це в майбутньому унеможливить прихід диктаторів до влади і дозволить змінити світ на краще.

9. Які WOW-жінки вас надихають?

Мене надихають жінки, які досягають своєї мети, які знаходяться в постійному розвитку, які вміють долати труднощі і насолоджуватися життям. Аналізуючи останній рік - у мене немає практично фото. Та й взагалі, всі мої фото взагалі, або з колегами, або з друзями, або з сім'єю. Спілкування з Вами надихнуло мене і я хочу зробити декілька фото. Я відправлю їх найближчими днями.

10. Яке місце або заняття робить вас найщасливішою?

Коли я бачу, що зробила щасливою людину, то я також щаслива. Коли донати пересилаю, я вірю, що це комусь допоможе і я щаслива. Я знаю, що волонтери це велика сила, тому що коли моєму племіннику (підірвався під Ізюмом на БТР) ампутували одну ногу і під загрозою була інша нога, то ми назбирали кошти на лікування і протезування. Ми назбирали гроші і купили 3 машини для підрозділів, в яких воюють наші колеги.

11. Що ви зробите в першу чергу, коли Україна переможе? Про що ви мрієте для себе та своєї родини після закінчення війни?

Коли Україна переможе, перш за все треба буде надавати психологічну допомогу нашим військовим і дітям, які втратили батьків. Про що я мрію для своєї родини - щоб у мене народилися внуки і вони ніколи не знали війни. Щоб ми могли знову всією сімєю подорожувати.
